Don coached at Waterloo West where his teams won over 300 dual meets while losing only 20. Don's Waterloo West teams won 9 state titles.

Don started the junior golf program in Waterloo in the 1950's. He was elected to the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame in 1991. In 1996, Don was elected into the Waterloo Golf Hall of Fame.

In 1978, Don was named the High School Golf Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Association.
